About the Department
Peshtigo Parks & Recreation stewards our city’s parks, trails, waterfronts, and public spaces while providing inclusive recreation programs for residents of all ages and abilities. We focus on safe, well‑maintained facilities; affordable, family‑friendly activities; and partnerships that build community pride.
Mission
To enhance quality of life in Peshtigo by caring for our natural and recreational assets, expanding opportunities for play and wellness, and engaging residents as partners in planning, volunteering, and stewardship.
What We Do
- Maintain & Improve Parks and Facilities: Playgrounds, ball fields, pavilions/shelters, bandshell, restrooms, trailheads, boat launches and waterfront access, and seasonal campground amenities. We emphasize preventive maintenance, safety, and clear signage.
- Flowage Access & Aquatic Weed Management: Maintain access to the Peshtigo Flowage—including operating an aquatic weed harvester to keep navigation channels open, improve safety, and support recreation and habitat.
- Year‑Round Recreation: Youth and adult activities that promote health, creativity, and connection.
- Community Events: Collaborations on festivals, outdoor movies, concerts, and seasonal celebrations in our parks and downtown spaces.
- Rentals & Permits: Pavilion/bandshell reservations, field use, and special event permits with clear guidelines and responsive service.
- Environmental Stewardship: Tree care and plantings, litter reduction, shoreline and water‑quality awareness, and support for citywide initiatives that protect our Flowage and natural areas.
How We Work — With You
We plan and deliver services in close collaboration with the Parks & Recreation Committee, City staff, local service clubs, the Peshtigo School District, the Peshtigo Area Chamber of Commerce, the Peshtigo Woman’s Club, the Peshtigo Lion’s Club, many other civic organizations and area businesses. Public input is central to our work: we regularly seek feedback on park priorities, program ideas, and accessibility improvements.
Current Focus Areas
- Great Basics: Clean, safe facilities; clear signage; routine preventive maintenance.
- Active Living for All Ages: More low‑cost and no‑cost options for youth, families, and older adults.
- Waterfront & Natural Areas: Access, safety, and education to keep our waterways healthy and welcoming.
- Inclusive Design: Steps toward barrier‑free play, seating, and path access.

“Get the Weeds Outta Here!” — harvester update. Our current aquatic weed harvester may be at the end of its service life after a recent breakdown; it may not be seaworthy for 2026. We are pursuing grants and partnerships to accelerate a replacement. Some grants, however, come with procurement requirements and timelines that could limit when a new vessel can be on the water next summer. To keep next year’s harvest on track, community donations can help bridge the gap. If you or your business can contribute toward a replacement, please contact City Hall. Our goal is $250,000 — gifts of any size help, and we’ll keep you updated as options and timelines firm up.
