Law Enforcement Application

POLICE CHIEF (Working Chief)

City of Peshtigo, Wisconsin

The City of Peshtigo, Wisconsin is seeking a proven, accountable, and community-focused law enforcement leader to serve as Police Chief. Peshtigo is a close-knit community that values public safety, professionalism, transparency, and responsive service.

The City is seeking a leader who is visible, decisive, fair, and committed to high standards of conduct and performance.

This position serves as the chief executive officer of the Police Department and operates as a working chief, providing full administrative leadership and management oversight while also maintaining an active patrol presence as operational needs require. The Chief reports directly to the Mayor and works collaboratively with City leadership, elected officials, staff, and community partners to ensure effective, ethical, and high-performing police services.

Position Overview

The Police Chief is responsible for:

  • Leading and managing all department operations, personnel, and resources
  • Maintaining patrol and response coverage as operational needs require
  • Establishing clear expectations, accountability standards, and professional culture
  • Ensuring constitutional, ethical, and community-oriented policing
  • Overseeing hiring, training, discipline, and performance management
  • Developing and administering the department budget
  • Managing policy development and regulatory compliance
  • Serving as public representative and community liaison
  • Coordinating emergency management and mutual aid efforts

This is a hands-on leadership role in a small municipal department requiring both operational involvement and executive oversight.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Current Wisconsin law enforcement certification (or ability to obtain)
  • Five (5) years of law enforcement experience, including supervisory experience
  • Demonstrated leadership, sound judgment, and ethical decision-making
  • Valid driver’s license and ability to pass a comprehensive background investigation

Preferred Qualifications

  • Command-level or executive leadership experience
  • Experience in a small or mid-sized municipal department
  • Strong budgeting, administrative, and personnel-management skills
  • Bachelor’s degree in criminal justice, public administration, or related field (or equivalent experience)

Work Schedule

This is an exempt position requiring irregular hours, emergency response availability, and scheduled working patrol shifts as staffing and operational needs require.

Chief of Police (Working Chief)

Department: Police Department
FLSA: Salary / Exempt

Reports To: Mayor (administrative coordination); operates under applicable Wisconsin statutes and City ordinances/policies.

Position Summary

Responsible for protecting lives and property in the City of Peshtigo through both active law enforcement service and leadership of all Police Department functions. The Chief serves as a working supervisor, providing full administrative leadership while also maintaining an active patrol presence as operational needs require.

Exercises independent judgment and discretion consistent with law, policy, and professional standards.

Distinguishing Features

  • Sets department vision and strategic goals while maintaining operational presence.
  • Maintains community visibility through enforcement activity and engagement.
  • Leads ethical, constitutional, and accountable policing.
  • Supports operational continuity by filling coverage gaps and responding to critical incidents.

Essential Functions

Working Patrol, Response, and Field Supervision

  • Perform duties of a sworn law enforcement officer including patrol, enforcement, investigations, arrests, and report writing, as operational needs require.
  • Provide shift coverage to possibly include nights, weekends, and holidays as needed.
  • Serve as on-call supervisor and respond to major incidents.
  • Provide field supervision ensuring officer safety and constitutional policing.

Operations and Leadership

  • Establish short- and long-term department goals.
  • Oversee daily patrol operations and investigative follow-up.
  • Monitor staffing and adjust assignments as needed.
  • Ensure constitutional rights, evidence integrity, and safe custody practices.

Training, Standards, and Professionalism

  • Ensure compliance with required certifications and continuing education.
  • Develop and evaluate training programs.
  • Promote community-oriented and evidence-based policing.
  • Maintain high standards of ethics, discipline, confidentiality, and professionalism.

Administration

  • Prepare and manage annual budget and oversee grant activity.
  • Develop and maintain policies and procedures.
  • Oversee hiring, promotion, discipline, commendations, and internal investigations.
  • Utilize data and reporting to guide deployment and enforcement priorities.

Community & External Relations

  • Serve as Public Information Officer (or designate).
  • Maintain community visibility and outreach.
  • Build relationships with partner agencies.
  • Coordinate emergency preparedness efforts.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Strong leadership and communication skills.
  • Ability to interpret and apply laws and policies.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality in personnel, investigative, and legal matters.
  • Ability to manage multiple responsibilities while maintaining operational presence.
