Extreme Cold Safety Reminder: Protect People, Pets & Pipes

Extreme Cold Safety Reminder: Protect People, Pets & Pipes

With dangerously cold temperatures, a few small steps can prevent emergencies at home. Please review the information below and share it with neighbors—especially seniors, families with young children, and anyone without reliable heat.

Protect Your Pipes (When Temperatures Stay Below Freezing)

  • Open cabinet/vanity doors where pipes run so warmer room air can circulate.

  • Let a small trickle of water run (about the diameter of a pencil lead) to keep water moving.

    • Please note: The City does not credit customers for running water during cold weather—except those customers who have already received authorization letters.

If Your Pipes Do Freeze

  • Shut off the water immediately at the main shut-off valve.

  • Thaw pipes using warm air (hair dryer or space heater). Never use an open flame.

  • Once thawed, turn the water back on slowly and check for cracks or leaks.

Dress for the Cold

  • Add layers, cover exposed skin, and limit time outdoors.

  • Bring pets inside and keep an emergency kit in your vehicle.

Know the Warning Signs

Frostbite: numbness, waxy/firm skin, white/grayish-yellow patches, redness or pain.
Hypothermia (adults): shivering, confusion, slurred speech, drowsiness, fumbling hands.
If someone’s temperature is below 95°F, seek medical attention immediately.

Warming Location if Power Goes Out

If your power goes out and you need a warm place to go, the City of Peshtigo Municipal Building will be available as a warming location.

There is an intercom system at the building that connects to our police officers or non-emergency dispatch, and an officer can let you into the building.

Please stay safe and warm—and don’t forget to keep your pets warm too. 🐾

Mayor Katie Berman, City of Peshtigo
